Why Do Separation Anxiety Training Specialists Work Online?

Long before the COVID pandemic launched Zoom to international fame, separation anxiety training specialists were already using this tool to tackle a common but complicated behavior issue. While there are many dog training services that work well with an in-person format, separation anxiety training isn’t one of them! Read on to find out why separation anxiety specialists train remotely (and why recommending in-person training for this tough issue is a sure sign that your trainer doesn’t “get” separation anxiety.)

1. Your dog can really practice being alone.

If your dog panics when they’re alone, we need to give them evidence that being alone is safe. In order to do that, we’re going to give them practice being alone for very short periods of time that they can handle without stress. If every training session with your dog involves a trainer lurking in your living room, your dog isn’t practicing being alone at all!

With remote training, I can walk you through training exercises without your dog ever knowing I’m watching. Your dog gets to practice “real” alone time, and you get to leave your dog with the confidence that an expert is monitoring their body language and behavior every moment you’re away.

2. Your dog’s opinion of strangers won’t impact training.

If your dog is scared of strangers, you may be dreading getting professional help with their separation anxiety because you’re worried about wasting valuable time with a slow “hello” before you can even start training. If this sounds like you, you’ll be relieved to know that online training allows you and your dog to jump right into absence training without any time spent on a lengthy introduction to your dog’s new trainer. That means you’ll reach your training goals sooner and with less stress, so you can get your life back and start leaving your dog without fear.

If your dog loves strangers, you know what a Big Event having guests over is for your dog and you can imagine how that burst of excitement can derail your dog’s daily rhythm. Dogs are very contextual learners, and we don’t want your dog learning that absences are only “safe” if they are preceded by a visit from someone exciting. With remote training, absence practice can be easily integrated into your dog’s routine so they can apply their new skills to real life absences when you actually need to leave.

3. You can work with a separation anxiety specialist anywhere in the world.

Separation anxiety and other separation-related behavior problems are complex behavior issues that many excellent trainers refer out. Even if you have a great behavior consultant nearby, they may not take these specialized cases. With online training, you can access help no matter where you are. I work with clients all across the United States and in other countries, too! Wherever you are, I’m here to help.

4. You can complete training on your own schedule, with greater flexibility.

While traditional dog training with an in-person model requires you to rearrange your schedule to make it to your consultation or group class, online separation anxiety training offers more flexibility. Complete your training assignments on your own time, whenever it makes most sense for you and your dog to practice. You’ll receive regular feedback on the training you do on your own, and you’ll find it easier to schedule live assessments with your trainer because you only need to set aside the time we spend meeting, rather than factoring in commute time, worrying about rush hour traffic, or cleaning your house before your trainer arrives.

5. Train as you are - pajamas welcome!

You’ve got enough on your plate tackling your dog’s separation anxiety, without also worrying about getting dressed up for an in-person event. Feel free to attend training sessions in your PJs, makeup-free. If your getting ready routine is a pre-departure cue that makes your dog anxious, we certainly don’t want to start training with it! With online training, you can show up to training as you are, skipping stress for yourself and your dog.

Conclusion

Separation anxiety isn’t resolved with in-person training, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be resolved! With modern technology and a systematic approach, we can tackle this difficult behavior issue and help you get your life back - without stressing your dog out! Still have your doubts?
