Separation Anxiety Medication Resources

For some dogs with separation anxiety, medication can be an important part of their treatment plan. However, in a culture where mental health issues are stigmatized and anti-anxiety medication is viewed as a “last resort,” it can be difficult to understand this topic or know what questions to ask your veterinarian to determine whether this is a good fit for your dog.

On this page, you will find a list of resources to help you decide whether you wish to discuss medication with your veterinarian, and to give you an understanding of how medication may support your separation anxiety training efforts. These resources also address common concerns I hear from pet guardians who are considering using medication to support their dog through the training process.

While these resources can provide you general information about behavior medication and its use in dogs, your dog is an individual and needs a personalized approach. Only your veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist can tell you whether prescription medications are an appropriate choice for your specific dog. Please use these resources to guide your conversation with your veterinarian, and understand that I cannot tell you whether or not medication is appropriate for your dog because I am not a veterinarian.

In recent years, I have seen an increase in clients using supplements such as CBD treats or CBD oil in an effort to provide their dog with stress relief. While the “natural” label attached to these supplements may make them sound safe, it is important to understand that any substance which has an impact on your dog’s body or mind has the potential to have a negative impact. Please discuss any supplements or treatments with your veterinarian before using them, even if these supplements are available over-the-counter or are marketed as “natural.” Your veterinarian is your best resource for evidence-informed, personalized health advice for your dog.
